Nar Shaddaa, the Smuggler's Moon is the economic and trade capital of Hutt Space. It is tidally locked to the swamp planet Nal Hutta and is entirely covered in decaying urban zones. It's air is polluted by industry and heavy traffic. Called the Smuggler's Moon because of the rampant crime which takes place here, it is not entirely lawless. The Hutts rule Hutt Space, and they are given a fairly loose chain by the Galactic Empire within their own territory. There is an Imperial Garrison on the moon and the Empire has assorted production facilities in the wealthier Sectors and in orbit.
The Smuggler's Moon is chaotically divided into countless sectors, districts, sub-precincts and levels. Even long time natives sometimes find it confusing and ever-changing. The local language is not Galactic Basic; it is Huttese, but countless languages are spoken in the congested markets, arenas and spaceports. Wise visitors and inhabitants wear Breath Masks and Eye Protection, when they are traveling outside of buildings with artificial atmosphere generators.
The Under-City is a world of hopelessness and desperation. Survival is a full-time profession here as the gangs of mutants and hideous beasts aren't even as dangerous as the chemicals and radioactive waste. Travel to the Under-City is pure madness and the legends of what happens down there are dark and twisted. The denizens of the Under-City are certainly not welcome above, they are recognizable by their hideous filthy appearances and the nauseating odor which lingers around them. They are thought to be disease-ridden and without any sort of ethics or morals.
